Founded in 1212, the St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig has captivated audiences worldwide for over 800 years. As one of the most distinguished boys’ choirs in Europe, its rich history includes serving as the musical home of Johann Sebastian Bach, who was the choir’s music director (Thomaskantor) from 1723 to 1750. The current music director, Andreas Reize, is the 18th since Bach’s tenure and the first Swiss conductor to lead the choir.
Its Houston performance will showcase an extraordinary program of sacred and classical works, reflecting its deep connection to the music of Bach and other masters. This rare opportunity to experience the St. Thomas Choir in concert is not to be missed.
Bach Society Houston Executive Director Rachel Dvoretzky notes, “Bach Society Houston is pleased to host Thomanerchor’s return to Houston after 12 years. Its artistic excellence complements ours in commitment to historically accurate performance of the music of Bach and his contemporaries, and we are delighted to bring this artistic and cultural jewel from our sister city Leipzig to Houston audiences.”
Bach Society Houston is dedicated to presenting the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries through inspiring performances of secular and sacred works, as well as through education and community engagement. Established in 1982 as an independent 501(c)(3) organization, the Bach Society Houston has achieved international acclaim. Notably, it became the first American professional choir invited to perform at BachFest in Leipzig, Germany, in both 2017 and 2023. Hailed by the Houston Chronicle as the “jewel of the Houston arts and music scene,” the organization presents a diverse array of programming, including Bach Vespers, chamber music concerts, and organ recitals. Additionally, it serves as a cultural ambassador through collaborations with consulates and cultural organizations around the world.
