A special meeting of the congregation will be convened on Sunday, May 20, at 12:15 p.m. (after the 10:50 service) to consider a resolution to support amendments to certain ELCA governing documents concerning regular calls to rostered pastors. The resolution, which was signed by 44 members of Christ the King Lutheran Church and submitted for consideration at the upcoming Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod Assembly, calls for the elimination of churchwide policies that prohibit rostered persons in committed same-gender relationships from serving in regular calls in ELCA congregations. For more information on the resolution, please click here and go to the "New or Noteworthy" section.

Interfaith Ministry Faith Tour

Faith tours provide opportunities to visit religious places of worship and learn of their beliefs, heritage and culture. These tours create opportunities to dialogue with other religious gruops to help dispel prejudices, find commonalities, increase knowledge, and discover a respect for each other’s individuality and faith tradition.

The next half-day faith tour will take place on Sunday, May 20 and will explore Abrahamic faiths by visiting a Quaker Meeting House, a Jewish Synagogue and a Mosque.

Prayer Around the Cross at Taizé Service

The Prayer Around the Cross will be held at the Taizé Eucharist on the first Saturday of each month at 6:00 p.m. A wooden cross on the floor of the altar sanctuary confronts worshipers with the suffering of Christ on behalf of humanity. In its presence the suffering of the world and our own burdens come to light. Christ gave salvation to all on the tree of the cross. It is the tree where life might be restored. Worshipers may choose to meditate on the cross from the pew or may enter the altar sanctuary and kneel at the cross.

Calling for Name Tag Sunday Volunteers

Twice a month we ask all members and visitors to wear name tags on Sunday mornings as a means of learning names and getting to know each other better. A new schedule will soon be compiled of those interested in assisting with this ministry. If you would like to arrive a few minutes early for service occasionally, and greet friends, members, visitors to church with a smile, a handshake, a word of welcome, please contact Donna Graham

Prayer Requests

To add a loved one to the prayer list please complete a prayer request card, located in the pew fronts, or on the mobile bulletin board, and give it to an usher, email the church office or call 713-523-2864. ext 21.

Education

Sunday Forum

Sundays at 9:45 a.m. in the basement classroom

Sunday Forum on May 13
“Doing life” in a Healthy Way Dr. Richard Hofmann returns.
Dr. Richard Hofmann, a clinical psychologist and director of the Canadian Chatsworth Pavilion Intervention Center, returns after only a few months to Christ the King Lutheran Church’s Sunday Forum. The philosophy of the Chatsworth Pavilion states, “We believe that recovery is much more than just overcoming self-defeating patterns and/or dependencies. We believe recovery is about “doing life” in a healthy way and “being well”. It is conquering our fears, mastering our inadequacies, restoring communication in our relationships, and nurturing our “inner strength of being”.

May 20: ReFirement instead of Retirement
Retirement used to be understood as the next phase after a long work life, retiring from many if not most activities and spending the rest of one’s years focusing on the challenges of aging and ailing, at best getting a bit of traveling in and helping with the grandchildren. This concept and its assumptions have changed dramatically. We are living much longer than our ancestors. There will be more retired folks than the still-working generations can support through taxes and charitable giving. And sitting around “doing nothing” indulging ourselves is not good for our health—mental, physical, or spiritual. It’s also a tragic waste of a lifetime worth of experience and education.
So, don’t retire. Just re-fire! Come to Sunday Forum on May 20 to participate in a conversation about a variety of key issues, facilitated by Linda Schoene and Pr. Kathy Haueisen. The conversation is based on the book ReFirement by James Gambone. Gambone, old enough now to retire, is too busy helping others enjoy this stage of life to even think about such a thing. This Forum is intended to be the start of an ongoing conversation on the topic to be continued at a Sunday evening table talk in early summer.
