Adult Forum

“The Problem of Pain”

Steve Wentland will lead the second session of a three part discussion of C.S. Lewis’ “The Problem of Pain.” C.S. Lewis attempts to reconcile the massive amount of pain and suffering (much of which we consider unjust) with an all-powerful, loving God. The last class will consider examples of how Lewis’ explanation works out in practice. Classes will be held in the second floor council room at 9:45-10:45 a.m.

Sacred Harp Singing Class

Come and learn from an expert! The final session of “The Gospel in Traditional Early American Choral Music” Sunday, February 15, from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Charles Whitmer, a local teacher and authority on the sacred harp singing tradition will conduct a live singing class where we will make up the choir, a true “hands on workshop.” Even non-music readers can do it. Class will be held in the adult classroom in the basement.

Mr. Whitmer teaches a Sacred Harp singing class once a month at the University of Houston, main campus in the choral recital room of the Moores School of Music building. He will teach a class there on February 15 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. If you’re interested in attending, contact Mel Rosenbaum

Prof. Gordon Lathrop to Preach

The Rev. Dr. Gordon W. Lathrop will preach in Sunday services on February 22. Professor Lathrop is Charles A. Schieren Professor of Liturgy at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. He also serves as Chaplain of the Seminary.

Caregivers Hold up the Sky

Family members are the backbone of providing care, and learning about the resources for caregivers such as support services and self-care can improve the experience of caregiving. Plan to join the Congregational Care Team at our meeting Friday, February 20. The discussion will be lead by Linda Schoene, our Parish Nurse. We meet at 6:30 p.m. for a potluck dinner at the home of Faith Venverloh. For information contact Diane Persson. (Note that the location has changed from previously printed articles).

YAP: Young Adult Perspectives

What it Means to Have Faith Like a Child? This will be the topic for the next YAP bible study /discussion group that meets on Saturday, February 21 at 7:15 p.m. (after Taizé) in the basement.

Fellowship

Good Food and Good Fellowship

The Christ the King Church food service ministry continues to serve outstanding meals for Wednesday Night Alive! from 5:30 - 7:15 p.m. All members who enjoy good food and good fellowship are invited to join us by volunteering one Wednesday night during the spring semester. We have a full range of volunteer positions available from skilled to unskilled (from cooks to servers to dishwashers). Even the most kitchen-phobic person will find the new dishwasher a blast! For more information or to volunteer, contact Courtney Harper

It’s Photo Time

For the benefit of our entire congregation we are creating a church family pictorial directory. In order for the directory to be a complete success, we need the participation of everyone in our church family.

Our new directory will be a valuable tool for all of us. With the turn of a page, everyone will know the face and name of each of our church members. Plus, our directory will help promote fellowship, showcase our church, and help us reach out to new members.

Photography sessions will be held April 20-24, 29, 30 and May 1. Sign-up for appointments will begin February 8 and will continue through March 14.

Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Supper

The annual Pancake Supper will be February 24 in the parish hall. Come and eat all the pancakes and sausage you can and enjoy the music of the Carnival. Traditionally, this is the day people eat up all the food they can’t have during Lent - butter, meat, eggs, and wine - and have a last big party to last them the six weeks until Easter. There will be projects for the kids, dancing for everyone, and we’ll sing our last “Alleluia.” Supper will be served from 5:15 until 6:45 p.m. If you can help shop, prepare or cook, please contact Marie Monroe. Come and have the most fun you’ll have until Easter.

Movies in the Hall!

This month’s feature movie will be Ice Age and a few Wallace & Gromit Videos.

Kids from ages 5-12 are invited to Movies in the Hall! on Saturday, February 21, from 5:30 -10:30 p.m. in the parish hall. There is no charge for this event. All children should bring their own supper and $1 for drinks and movie snacks. Optional items include a pillow, blanket and sleepwear.

To participate, sign up in the nursery. In order to keep this a free childcare event, the parents of participating children must supervise the event once a year.

Cookie Break on Tuesdays at Rice

Take a break from studying or working and make plans to join us on Tuesday afternoons from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the Hess Dining Room (at Sammy’s behind the Coffee House in the RMC) for free cookies, coffee, and conversation. Feel free to pull up a pillow and chat, or grab a quick sugar and caffeine fix and run!
