Have You Had “The Talk”?
It’s now 2010, a new year, a new decade and an opportunity for new resolutions. One resolution to consider is the importance of having “the talk.” Conveying our thoughts and feelings related to end-of-life issues to family and friends will assist loved ones in making difficult decisions. Completing the legal forms, Texas Directive to Physician and Texas Medical Power of Attorney, will put those wishes on paper. Such discussions can be difficult, but need to happen in order to insure that individual choices are honored. Knowing how a family member feels about end-of-life treatments also eases the pain of making a decision for a loved one.
- The Directive to Physician and Medical Power of Attorney are available online at www.dads.state.tx.us/news_info/publications. The forms do not need to be notarized, but there are some restrictions as to who may serve as a witness. A full explanation is available online.
- Make several copies of the completed forms for your healthcare provider and family members.
- Hospitals are required to inquire about the existence of such forms when an individual is admitted. Hospitals must also provide information and assistance as needed to complete the forms.
- The forms may be revoked if your feelings or situation change.
- You may also submit a copy to the church office. In addition, a funeral preparation form is available. Individuals can identify favorite hymns, scriptures and other desires related to a funeral or memorial service.
- Most importantly, take the time to have “the talk”.
