158 Christ the King Volunteers Work at The Food Bank In 2009

by Anna Stock, Houston Food Bank coordinator

We honor the 158 CTK volunteers who worked a total of 474 hours at the Houston Food Bank (HBF) on six Saturday mornings in 2009. This is an increase of 35 volunteers over last year. There were some “one-timers” and many “repeaters,” some of whom worked all 6 Saturdays. The 474 hours worked by CTK in 2009 are valued at $19.51 each for grant writing purposes, making the 2009 CTK volunteer efforts worth $9,248.00. Last year there were 123 volunteers who worked 369 hours for a contribution worth $7,200. In 2007 CTK volunteers worked a total of 279 hours that were valued at $4,185. Remember 2004 when CTK averaged only two to three workers who volunteered on six dates? Good Work!
The HFB can stretch a dollar to purchase between $6 and $8 worth of food since volunteers eliminate most of the salary expense. Assuming an average of $7.00, our $9,248.00 “contribution” allowed the HFB to purchase $64,736 worth of food, which translates into about 44,000 meals.
CTK is making a meaningful difference in an organization that feeds over 250,000 persons every month! Aren’t you glad you volunteer?
