What is DivineChocolate?
Cocoa is big business. Americans consume more than $14 billion in chocolate every year, and at least 40 million people rely on cocoa for their livelihood. Despite these facts, many cocoa farmers live in severe poverty, unable to find clean water to drink and unsure where their next meal will come from. Obviously, all that money made on chocolate is not getting past the middlemen to the farmers.
Divine Chocolate is different! It is owned by 45,000 cocoa farmers in Kuapa Kokoo in Ghana. The proceeds go to build wells, fund schools and provide mobile medical clinics for their communities. They earn a fair price for their cocoa and are working their way out of poverty, one cocoa bean at a time. The members of the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative elect representatives to Divine’s board of directors, have a say in how their cocoa is produced and marketed, and receive dividends from Divine’s profits. In this way, the members of the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative are involved in the business decisions from “bean to bar,” setting a powerful example for companies across the globe.
Be sure to purchase one for everyone in the family. Let your daughter or son in college, or your mother or father living out of town know you are thinking about them. Send them a chocolate Advent calendar.
By uniting farmers, shareholders and consumers, the good we can accomplish is sweet indeed!
