October is Children’s Health Month

There is so much to think about when creating safe, nurturing environments for children. Consider the following for a child’s physical and emotional health.

  1. 1. Keep medicines and hazardous household chemicals locked up and out of sight. Use child-resistant packaging for medicines and hazardous household chemicals, and call 1-800-222-1222 if a poisoning occurs.
    2. Never leave standing liquids unattended. Stay within arm’s reach while your child is bathing or near any container of water. If the phone rings, let it ring; stay with your child.
    3. Change the battery in your smoke alarm when you change your clock’s setting in October.
    4. Babies on adult beds risk suffocation from hidden hazards such as entrapment between the bed and wall; entrapment involving the bed frame, headboard and footboard; or soft bedding such as pillows or thick quilts and comforters. Newborns should be put on their backs for sleep.
    5. Prevent tap water scalds by adjusting the temperature on the hot water heater to 120º F.
    6. Don’t smoke and don’t let others smoke in your house.
    7. Reinforce healthy eating by including plenty of fruits and vegetables in family meals. Allow children to help with shopping and meal preparation.
    8. Make sure to provide children with the appropriate protective gear for their physical activities, such as helmets and knee pads.
    9. Learn CPR.
    10. Teach children the importance of hand washing. Have them sing Happy Birthday or Johnny Appleseed to themselves so they’ll know how long to wash.
    11. Always wear a seat belt and make sure children in the car do the same.
    12. Spend time talking with your children each day to find out what is going on in their lives.
    13. Answer children’s questions openly and honestly.
    14. Encourage children’s spiritual growth.
    15. When children present challenging situations or behaviors, take heart, most children do so at one time or another. Seek comfort and support from trusted friends or other parents who have “been there”.
