Houston Food Bank - Next Trip September 12

submitted by Christ the King Church coordinator, Anna Stock

logoChrist the King Church sent 26 volunteers to the Houston Food Bank on July 11, 2009. Four of us worked at packing boxes containing food for a week for a family of four, and the remaining 22 Christ the King Church volunteers worked the conveyor belt we call the "Lucy Line" along with 6 other volunteers. We cleaned, sorted and packed twice the amount of donated food the workers on the other conveyor belt handled that morning! We are hard working, enthusiastic, and clearly fine looking volunteers.

In August 2009 Christ the King Church volunteers will be featured in the Houston Food Bank Newsletter. Look for our story on the church's bulletin board. Christ the King Church volunteers are being featured because of our long history of regularly volunteering at the Food Bank and because we are capable and enthusiastic. Christ the King Church members and friends volunteer at the food bank on the second Saturday of odd numbered months for approximately 3.5 hours. Our next scheduled dates are September 12 and November 11. Put these dates on your calendar. New volunteers are always welcome to join us.
Christ the King Church volunteers have been invited by the Houston Food Bank to participate on November 11 in an event known as "Canstruction." On that Saturday morning we will assist engineers with the deconstruction of the estimated 50,000 pounds of canned goods that competing architects and engineering firms will donate and then assemble (using only tape and canned goods) into amazing, complex, and very large structures. These creations will have been on display at Center Point Energy beginning about November 4. The goal is not only to attract publicity for the food bank with the creative projects, but also to receive a major contribution of food for distribution to the hungry by the Food Bank. We are pleased to be asked to participate in what promises to be a fun and interesting day. Details to follow. Plan now to join us November 11 for a new experience.
