2009 Churchwide Assembly Update
August 17-23, 2009 • Minneapolis, Minnesota

Our biennial churchwide assembly will be held in Minneapolis this month. Central Lutheran Church, the largest Cathedral-style sanctuary in North America, is hosting opening worship on Saturday. Carlos Peña, member of First Lutheran in Galveston, is up for re-election as ELCA Vice President. Pr. Moore will be attending the Assembly as a voting delegate.

What’s being voted on?
The key topics planned for discussion at this assembly are as follows:

• "Confessing Our Faith Together," a proposal for full communion between the ELCA and the United Methodist Church
• "Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust," a proposed ELCA social statement
• "Report and Recommendation on Ministry Policies" from the Task Force on Human Sexuality
• Fundraising proposal for a churchwide HIV and AIDS strategy
• Proposal for further development of a Lutheran Malaria Initiative

During the assembly week:
Eternal and Gracious God, We pray for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and its members who gather this week in its Churchwide Assembly. Inspire the celebration of your varied works throughout the church. Instill your peace in the midst of anxious deliberation. Shape the work of the church according to your will for the whole world.
