Bread for the World’s 2009 Offering of Letters will be held after each service at Christ the King Church on Sunday, May 10, Mother’s Day.
Each of us will have an opportunity to write Congress urging support for programs to provide more and better aid for the world’s poorest countries. The global-wide run-up in food-stuff prices has resulted in global-wide increases in poverty, malnutrition and starvation. The brunt of the problems fall on mothers who are fighting harder and harder to feed and cloth their children. We are seeing the progress made in recent years fighting hunger slip away.
This year, we call on Congress to rework U.S. foreign assistance so it is more effective in reducing poverty. The improvements will strengthen the ability of the U.S. to promote global development, promote economic growth, and support the efforts of poor people to lift themselves out of hunger and poverty.
