The Bach Society will present Piffaro, The Renaissance Band on Sunday, March 15, 6:00 p. m., in the nave at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Piffaro is renowned for its highly polished performances as the pied-pipers of early music, bringing to life the elegant sounds of the official, professional wind bands, and the rustic music of the peasantry of the late Medieval and Renaissance periods.
This concert will recreate the lively musical world of Johann Ambrosius Bach, father of Johann Sebastian Bach, a member of the town band of Arnstadt, one of many professional wind bands which served cities, courts, and cathedrals in 17th century Germany. This concert will mark the debut of a consort of Deutsche Schalmei, the only one of its kind in the U. S. The program includes works by Praetorius, Hassler, Scheidt, and Schultz.
The members of Piffaro include Grant Herreid (lute, guitar, recorder, shawm, and percussion); Greg Ingles (sackbut, recorder, and percussion); Joan Kimball (shawm, dulcian, recorder, and bagpipe); Priscilla Smith (shawm, dulcian, recorder, and bagpipe); Robert Wiemken (dulcian, shawm, recorder, and percussion); and guest Mack Ramsey (sackbut and recorder).
