photoThe Rev. Timothy J. Wengert returns to Christ the King Church on Festival weekend, November 21-23. Pastor Wengert will preach in Festival worship on Sunday, November 23. Hi will also teach an enlightening and entertaining Sunday Forum class on “Giving the Devil His Due: How Lutherans View the Evil One.”

Dr. Wengert served as theologian-in-residence for the Melanchthon Institute in the fall of 2004. Timothy Wengert is professor of Reformation History at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. His translation of Luther’s Small Catechism from that volume is used widely throughout the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Professor Wengert is the leading American scholar on Philipp Melanchthon. In February 2000, the city of Bretten, Germany (Melanchthon’s birth place) awarded him the Melanchthon Prize for contributions to the field of Reformation scholarship, especially for his book on Melanchthon and Erasmus. This was the first time that the prize, awarded every three years upon the recommendation of the Verein für Reformationsgeschichte, was given to an American.

Dr. Wengert studied at the University of Michigan (BA 1972, MA 1973), Luther Seminary (M.Div 1977) and Duke University (PhD 1984). He served as a parish pastor in Wisconsin seven years and is currently a member of the ELCA-United Methodist dialog team. He is married to Pastor Ingrid Fath Wengert.
