September ─ Lutheran Church of the Galilean
Our Monthly Mission Offerings Helped
In June, 2007, the Mission Offering raised $1,653 to support the Lutheran Church of the Galilean in La Place, Louisiana, and its relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina.
Christ the King Church has commited to help this sister congregatioin for three years.
The people of the Lutheran Church of the Galilean thank you for being our mission partner in helping us to maintain a Lutheran presence in LaPlace. With you and other mission partner’s support we have been granted a mortgage from the Mission Investment Fund (MIF) and are now just waiting for a closing date. Late last summer and into the fall the congregation faced a problem with mold in the sanctuary walls that was only partially covered by the MIF’s insurance. The mold problem was attributed to a design problem which required replacing the exterior stucco walls with a cement board product and new larger gutters. We now face a repair or replacement of our heating and air conditioning systems as some of the units have failed. Estimates so far are between $20 to $50,000 to replace everything which will provide a more economical system for the future. We continue to reach out to the community by providing 4 basketball goals on our lighted parking lot. This provides a place for many of the community’s youth to play in the afternoons and evenings. There are on most nights anywhere from 10 to 50 players of all ages.
The congregation was without a called pastor from the time of Katrina until I accepted a part time call last October and began my ministry with them in December. Our worship average was 45 last year and look forward to it being closer to 50 this year.
We will be sending all mission partners a new DVD after we close on the church property.
I want to again thank you for the support you have given this congregation. It is greatly appreciated.
Pastor Kenneth E. Shuman
