Houston’s Care for Elders organization is asking the growing population of older adults, “Are you ready to live with passion, freedom, independence and purpose?” To help Houston’s older citizens answer this question, Care for Elders is partnering with the City of Houston and over 80 other local organizations to launch Get Ready for Life, an initiative designed to assist older adults as they plan for life’s transitions.
The Get Ready for Life program provides information on health, finances, housing and happiness via its website. The health link includes information about nutrition, regular checkups, staying active and keeping the mind sharp. Finances covers important areas of maintaining a budget on a fixed income, paying for health care and making sure your wishes are reflected in wills, trusts and advanced directives. The housing option allows individuals and their families to explore assisted living facilities, how to modify one’s home to meet changing needs and guidance on securing in-home assistance. The happiness section provides thoughts on how to remain active, pursue hobbies, volunteering and being connected to faith communities.
Get Ready for Life materials are free and may be obtained through their website or by calling 713-558-6391. In addition, the United Way of Greater Houston operates 2-1-1, the number to dial for information about health and human services in the Houston area. It is staffed by certified information and referral specialist who have access to translation services in over 150 languages. These experts can help older adults and their families navigate the sometimes confusing maze of resources and support groups.
Together, Get Ready for Life and 2-1-1 are there to provide reliable information and assistance. Adults over 60 and their families are encouraged to begin planning now to ensure a smoother transition through those challenging older years.
