January 6:
Seeing the Human Being in Charity and Volunteer Work

On Epiphany Sunday, January 6, Sunday Forum and the congregation are invited to gather in the parish hall for King’s cake and enjoy fellowship after holidays and travel. Our Norwegian guest Irene Kristiansen, whose fellowship we have enjoyed since the fall, will be present to informally address those assembled about her experiences in the United States before she returns home. Irene is writing a thesis for her master degree in Social Anthropology at Bergen University. During her stay in Houston examined charity and non-profit agencies. She worked with the Christian Community Service Center (CCSC), sings with the Chorus and is active in the young adult ministry.

January 13:
The Rev. Dr. Martin Marty: When Faiths Collide
Dr. Marty’s book, When Faiths Collide, has been described as “a marvelous accomplishment.”  Collisions of faiths are among the most threatening conflicts around the world at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Tackling people’s fears of religious pluralism, Dr. Marty believes that citizens, religions, and identities can in fact survive in radically pluralist settings. He argues that the first address to communities involved in collisions of faith should not be the conventional plea for tolerance, but a call that at least one party risk hospitality toward the other.

On January 20 and 27 Michael McGinley will engage Sunday Forum in the area of art. Discussions about art in the public arena can get heated and are carried out with zest when it speaks to moral and ethical sensibilities. On January 20, Michael will lead a discussion on two examples of the dilemmas art faces. On the following Sunday he will give a handy tool kit for all interested in looking at and understanding art in a session called: Looking at Art Like a Pro.He and his wife Monica have been members of Christ the King Church since December 2006.

January 20: Dilemmas in Art
Should art answer to an ethical demand? How can we memorialize the victims of 9/11 to the satisfaction of all? In this discussion we will debate the merits of one of the art works dedicated to 9/11 and if it was appropriate. A second moral dilemma: Who owns art? Should all art work be returned to their original owners or country of origin? Here will debate the demands being made on museum collections by prior owners and nations, the impact this has on our access to art, and most fundamentally what's the right thing to do.

January 27: Looking at Art Like a Pro
How do you analyze a work of art? Do you want to impress your significant other, friends or even strangers at the museum? Here we will explore the visual tool kit the artist uses to make a great work of art truly great. The tool kit includes elements and principles of art, and we'll learn what each tool does by applying them to selected works in our discussion. Upon completion of the class you will be awarded a certificate of 'Artistic Criticality and Connoisseurship' suitable for framing.
