The Saturday evening worship service at Christ the King Church has once been called the best known secret in town. The service held in the style of the international, ecumenical community of brothers in Taizé, France, has attracted worshipers from all over the Houston metropolitan area in the seven years since its inception.
The Taizé community in France has at its center the study of and listening to the Word of God, seeking understanding of its meaning for the world. The community ministers especially to the youth who make their pilgrimage to Taizé from all over the world.
The characteristic style of Taizé worship is built on the principle of alternating music, scripture and silence. The typical Taizé songs use short passages from scripture and are sung to simple melodies which are repeated over and over. Music and silence shape the hearing and meditation of God’s Word. At Christ the King Church the Eucharist is celebrated at every service adding the dimension of the visible, sacramental Word to the experience of the audible Word. On the first Saturday of the month the adoration of the cross offers yet another variation for focused meditation. On first Saturdays the congregational singing is accompanied by the Ethnos string quartet.
The Taizé evening service is held every Saturday at 6:00 p.m. in the nave. Holy Communion is open to all baptized.
