Christ the King Lutheran Church youth and adults are traveling to Germany during Spring Break, March 10-19. Destination cities include Berlin, Leipzig, Wittenberg, and Eisenach. The trip will explore key sites in the history of the Reformation and Lutheran heritage, such as the Castle Church where Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses, the Lutherhaus (museum), and the City Church in which Luther preached often. Other excursions include visits to the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, and Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar.
Much of the activity will take place in Leipzig with a reception at the city hall, a visit to the Porsche factory, and a visit to the famous monument to the Battle of the Nations in which Napoleon was defeated. There will be several opportunities to visit St. Thomas Church where Johann Sebastian Bach worked and is buried. The group will also attend a rehearsal of the famous Boy Choir of St. Thomas Church.
Pastor Robert Moore, Cindi Scruggs, Adrienne Winston and Tim Lenz will lead the group of twelve youth which include: Tevin Bhola, Isaac Graham, Evan Harper, Andrea Salas, Heather and Julia Scruggs, Terrell Steed, Kristin West, Andrew Winston, Matthew Winston, Nathaniel Winston and Timothy Winston. Also traveling with the group are Kris Phillips, Richard Scruggs, and Joseph Winston.
One of the special features of the trip will include staying with families of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. All ten host families live in the central part of the city. During the trip the youth of Christ the King Church will have the opportunity to meet and have fellowship with many of the youth from St. Thomas Church as we share meals together and participate in a youth led worship service on our final day. Christ the King Lutheran Church will have the opportunity to host students from Leipzig at a future date. Please keep our youth and adult leaders in your prayers as they journey into the beautiful country of Germany. The group will be sent by the congregation in services on March 4 in which the mayor of Leipzig, the honorable Burkhard Jung will be present.
