Professor Patten is the author of Charles Dickens and His Publishers and George Cruikshank’s Life, Times, and Art, which was recently chosen by the Guardian as the best biography of the decade. He has held fellowships from Fulbright, Guggenheim, and the National Endowment for the Humanities and serves as editor of Studies in English Literature 1500–1900 (SEL). He has been a fellow at the National Humanities Center and at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. He currently is president of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing and is a Phi Beta Kappa Couper Scholar. Professor Patten teaches courses in 19th-century British literature and art, the European novel, and the history of the book.
Professor Patten has appeared on several programs on the Biography Channel. He attends Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal).
