Mayor of Leipzig to Visit Houston and Christ the King Church

Christ the King Lutheran Church is honored to welcome the Honorable Burkhard Jung, Mayor of Leipzig, on March 4. Mayor Jung will bring a greeting to the congregation at the 10:50 a.m. service, at which the Bach Choir will sing and the youth of Christ the King Church will be “sent” for their spring-break trip to Germany.

Mayor Jung will be accompanied by a delegation of dignitaries from the education, economic, cultural, private, and government sectors of the city. The delegation is scheduled for visits at City Hall, Rice University, the Texas Medical Center, the Federal Reserve, and the Rodeo.

Mayor Jung was elected to office in 2006 and was sworn into office on May 17. He was born in Siegen, Germany and studied at the University of Münster to be a school teacher with specialties in German studies and Protestant theology. In 1991 Jung was called to Leipzig to establish the Protestant school. In 1999 he was appointed Councillor for Youth, Education, and Sports in the city government. Two years later became Councillor for Youth, Social Welfare, Health and Education. Mayor Jung is married and has four children.

The cities of Houston and Leipzig have been officially sister cities since 1993. Our members, Wolfgang and Angelika Schmidt, were instrumental in establishing the relationship after German reunification. Our congregation has enjoyed the fruits of this relationship in the many exchanges and visits by citizens including students, musicians, pastors, politicians, and business people. Pastor Christian Wolff of St. Thomas Church as been a guest preacher here on several occasions. Pastor Robert Moore and Kathy spent four and a half months in Leipzig while on sabbatical. Pastor Moore was guest pastor on St. Thomas Church. Our youth will stay in private homes of members of St. Thomas Church in March.
