Bach Society

The Bach Society at Christ the King Lutheran Church offers three exciting events in the month of February. On February 4, Bach Vespers will feature the Bach Choir and Orchestra under music director Albert LeDoux. The program includes J.S. Bach’s cantata Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit, and the motet Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener by Johann Christoph Bach. The Vespers service begins at 5:00 p.m.

On February 18, the Calmus Ensemble from Leipzig returns to Houston with a new program showcasing the young group’s astounding stylistic breadth: in addition to Bach’s motet Jesu, meine Freude, the vocal quintet will sing works by Josquin, di Lasso, Elgar, Taverner, Mendelssohn, and other composers. This Abendmusik presentation begins at 5:00 p.m.

The Buxtehude Trio lives in Amsterdam but includes two ex-Houstonians also heard on last year’s series, Christina Edelen (harpsichord) and Mimi Mitchell (baroque violin). Together with Cassandra Luckhardt (viola da gamba) they will perform works by Buxtehude, Krieger, Erlbach, Becker, Spiegler, and Richter. This Chamber Music concert will be held on Sunday, February 25 in the parish hall beginning at 7:30 p.m.; seating is limited, so visitors are encouraged to arrive early.

All Bach Society programs are offered without admission charge; a free-will offering will be accepted to support the series. For more information visit the Bach Society website or call 713-523-2864.
