In cooperation with SEARCH, Interfaith Ministries is sponsoring an Interfaith Prayer Service commemorating Martin luther King’s birthday.
“Keeping the Dream Alive” is the theme for an interfaith prayer service commemorating the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., to be held at 12 noon, Monday, January 15, South Main Baptist Church, 4100 Main Street. Focusing on homelessness, hunger, housing and health care, the commemorative service is sponsored by SEARCH, Interfaith Ministries, South Main Baptist Church and the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County, Inc.
“Ending homelessness is the focus of SEARCH, but the other issues – hunger, housing and health care – are all part of the equation,” said SEARCH president and CEO Laurence J. Payne. “I believe Dr. King would be surprised and distressed that in 2006 we have so many going without the essentials of a decent life. We want this service to be a call to action for all of our community. We can do better.” Payne notes that last year, Houston showed the world the meaning of community spirit in helping thousands of Katrina evacuees. “We now need to do the same for our own citizens, and this year can be the year,” he said.
“Dr. King represents the best intentions of all people of faith,”
said Elliot Gershenson, president and CEO of Interfaith Ministries. “SEARCH
and all of its supporters provide an avenue to help complete the dream that
every man and woman has – that being a good job, a good home and a good
community. IM shares that vision and dream for all people and through Meals
on Wheels for Greater Houston we do our share to assure that seniors can maintain
a quality of life that they so richly deserve.”
