Second Friday Filmgoers - December 9

The Christ the King Church Film Discussion Group will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9, at Skewers Restaurant located at the corner of Richmond and Wesleyan. This will give us more choices at the nearby Edwards Cinema or the Landmark Greenway Plaza film houses. Afterward, we will meet for dessert at either the Renaissance Hotel by the Landmark Theater or the Ice Cream shop next to Skewers.

If you enjoy pondering and discussing films, come join our Second Friday Film Discussion Group. Our film viewings vary between the River Oaks and Greenway Landmark Theaters, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and Rice University film programs. We’ve also attended some film festivals and will look forward to visiting some of the microcinema venues in the next year.

However, it is difficult to make film choices a month in advance since the theaters may shift films. Last year, we chose the film by meeting for dinner before the film and discussing some of the options. This seemed to work well since many filmgoers liked to see more current films than available through the Museum or university programs.

It has been suggested that we coordinate the film choices now by email so that we can get some suggestions within the week of the meeting. If you would like to be on the e-mail list for the Second Friday Film Discussion Group please contact Anna Fay Williams.

We had a good turnout and discussion following “Capote” last month at the River Oaks Landmark Theatre. Several filmgoers thought they’d put it back on their list for another viewing. The film certainly brought back memories of the era and Capote’s authorship of “In Cold Blood,” a novel based on a murder which created a new literary genre. While he achieved considerable fame for his book, it was his editorial assistant, Harper Lee, in the background in the film, who wrote the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
