... a time for churches to renew their commitment to end hunger in God’s world. Major church bodies, religious organizations, and congregations are all participating in a global effort to overcome poverty and disease in Africa, the United States, and around the world. And for many, volunteering in soup kitchens and food pantries is one of the ways they seek to live out the Gospel
In recent months, the world’s leaders have pledged to speed up debt relief and to increase assistance to Africa-where one third of the population faces starvation or malnutrition. In the United States, with an alarming increase in hunger in each of the last four years, Congress and the President may soon adopt measures to end chronic hunger in the U.S. by 2015.
For more than 30 years, Bread for the World has provided leadership and resources that enable people of faith to address the causes of hunger. By persuading elected officials to change our nation’s policies, Bread for the World helps give hungry people the tools and resources they need to feed their families and make a living.
On October 16, we give thanks for the work of Bread for the World, which has enabled so many to be effective advocates for hungry people. We reflect on God’s gifts of food and well-being, we pray for those in need, and we renew our commitment to share our abundance with others.
The challenges of hunger can seem overwhelming, but as people of faith we have opportunities to make dramatic progress in reducing hunger in our own country and around the world. Even in these difficult times, our own country and other nations have come together -to lift the burden of debt on poor countries and to increase assistance for overcoming poverty and disease. The U.S. Congress and President Bush are considering proposals to reform and improve programs that provide essential nutrition to children, the elderly, and others in our own country who don’t get enough to eat.
Join Christ the King Church members and friends after the Sunday services on October 16 in a letter writing campaign to our public officials. Sample letters, writing materials, and stamps will be available.
