Staff Profile: Love of Children Keeps Caregiver Energized

“I love working with all the children and meeting their parents.”– Ingrid Steed

For many years at Christ the King, church volunteers made up the nursery staff. They cared for the infants and toddlers, diapered them, fed them and played with them. But as the number of young families in our congregation grew, so did the demand for nursery care. In 1993, church council made financial arrangements to hire a nursery attendant. Ingrid Steed joined our staff that year, and since then has looked after our parishioner’s littlest members.

Ingrid’s experience with children started as a child in Saint Georges, Grenada. Born and raised on this 132-square-mile island, she’s fifth in a line of nine children – five girls and four boys. “Living on the island was like being on vacation all the time,” Ingrid said. “We didn’t have many toys, so we practically lived at the beach. The girls always pretended to be the teachers, and the trees were our students.”

Spending so much time outdoors certainly explains Ingrid’s love for nature. She loves to walk and play cricket, the sport of choice on her native isle. In 1982, Ingrid said farewell to island life and followed her brother to New York City. Living in Brooklyn was a shock to her system and after one year she tagged along with her brother once more. This time they settled in the Space City.

Ingrid arrived in Houston 22 years ago. Since then she has cared for numerous children, including many of our own at Christ the King. “I love working with all the children and meeting their parents,” she explained. “Pastor Moore and his family, as well as the rest of the congregation, have always treated us like family.”

After 12 years at Christ the King, Ingrid recalls many funny stories. One in particular stands out. “I remember checking on a child that had been taking awhile in the bathroom,” she recalled. “And when I peeked in, he was sitting there with all of his clothes off reading a book. When I asked what he was doing, he said that’s what his Daddy does.”

Ingrid lives in West University and has three children: Lorna (30), Nigel (24) and Terrell (11), and 13-year-old grandson Hynson. All of them live in the Houston area

Thank you, Ingrid, for all you do for our children and for your loyalty and dedication to our nursery ministry. We look forward to another 12 years of service.
