March 11 efforts from Christ the King Church at the Houston Food Bank

Submitted by Anna L. Stock

Dewey and Nancy Letness, Patricia Barnard, and David and Anna Stock represented Christ the King at the Houston Food Bank (HFB) last month. The three ladies worked on the assembly line from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. as “product recovery specialists.” HEB had sent numerous pallets of salvaged food items from many stores, and we product recovery specialists cleaned, sorted, and rejected hundreds of food items to be repackaged and stored in the warehouse for distribution this month to those in need. David and Dewey were “Agency Order Pullers.” The HFB warehouse holds 250 items that charities can order in bulk as needed. David and Dewey and another volunteer were one of 15 teams that filled the orders for crates of cereal, snack items, canned meats, etc. The charities will arrive on Monday to pick up their orders for the week. It was physically demanding, but we are happy to have helped, and we look forward to going again. Join us May 9, 2005.

For your information, a sheet will be posted on the bulletin board at CTK listing the jobs volunteers can do at the HFB. Check it out.

The HFB distributes 27 MILLION pounds of nutritious food each year, helping 230,000 people in need each month, serving 400 hunger relief programs in an 18-county service area. This is accomplished mostly with volunteers.
