“I’m famished!” “I’m starving!” These are phrases any of us may say, for example, to a dining companion in a restaurant. But do we ever stop and think about it?

The U.S. obesity epidemic in a hungry world

When it comes to their experience of hunger, North Americans face a sobering reality. While much of the world suffers from malnutrition, North Americans are literally eating themselves to death. Our rate of obesity and overweight has soared in recent years, and with it weight-related illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, stroke, arthritis and other ailments.

Fact:

Hunger and malnutrition kill more people globally than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
