Farewell From Paul Meier, Organist

Dear members and friends of Christ the King Church,

As I leave and reflect on the time that I spent at Christ the King, I realize the many things for which I am grateful. I thank you for the kindness, generosity, encouragement, and opportunities for growth that you have given me. Also, I am thankful for the wonderful individuals I have met and come to know at Christ the King.

Christ the King is a unique place with a unique organ. Before moving to Houston, I had read about the organ at Christ the King. As the only organ in North America modeled after the organs of Zacharias Hildebrandt, it is an important instrument for our understanding of the instruments that Johann Sebastian Bach would have played and may have been imagining when he composed some of his organ works. Never did I imagine that I would have the opportunity to play the organ at Christ the King on a regular basis, let alone serve as organist for Christ the King.

At Christ the King, I have had the opportunity for a number of musical roles that have furthered my musical growth and provided me with the opportunity to meet many wonderful people. These roles have included the following: organist, pianist, accompanist for the church choir, accompanist for the various childrens choirs, director of the youth choir, director of the ensemble, musical director for the Taizé services, and organist for the Bach Society. Each of these experiences has helped me to grow as both a musician and a person.

It is with a touch of sadness that I realize that I will not be here to participate in or share in the new programs and growth that you will be experiencing at Christ the King. You have become my church home and church family, and I will miss you. However, I do not want to lose my contact with you, and I hope that there will be some times in the future when you invite me back.

With warm wishes,

Paul
