Congratulations, Graduates!

High School

Molly Kathleen Frazier, daughter of Lorraine and David Frazier, graduated from Cy-Fair High School.

Andrew Kragas graduated from Stratford High School. He will attend the University of Texas in Austin in the fall, majoring in mechanical engineering. Andrew hopes to remain involved in music as well.

Michael Matheny also graduated from Stratford, where he was on the varsity track team and was a member of the National Honor Society. Michael will attend Texas Lutheran University in Seguin.

Garrett Troff graduated from Bellaire High School. Garrett will attend WyoTech, an automotive technical school, in Laramie, Wyoming. Garrett will be studying for his Associate’s Degree in automotive and diesel engine repair for 12 months. Upon completion of this program, he hopes to be selected to participate in the automotive dealer’s “step programs,” through which dealers train and certify the technicians on their models. He is hoping to become a Certified Master Techinican, which will take a minimum of five years.

Classes start for Garrett on July 3, so he will be leaving at the end of June. He and his sister, Angie, are planning to take a road trip to Wyoming, stopping in Colorado first, then heading to Laramie. In addition to the road trip to school, Garrett will be traveling with his aunt either to Europe or South America for a week after his graduation.

Undergraduate Programs

Jesse Mitchell Cates (Jess), son of Diane and John, graduated from St. Edwards University with a Bachelors Degree in Communications and Marketing.

Jess grew up in Spring and was confirmed at Kinsman Lutheran Church. He had already moved to Austin when John and Diane moved inside the Loop and joined Christ the King Church.

Graduate Programs

Charles Huber, son of Velma and Don Rice, received his PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Anne Hutson received her a PhD in Biology from the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine.

Anne’s dissertation title was “Norwalk Virus-Cell Interactions and Host Susceptibility Factors.” She discovered that not everyone is susceptible to the Norwalk virus, one strain of the cruise ship viruses. Apparently this virus binds to a receptor on the surface of some people’s cells. People who do not express this receptor are resistant to Norwak virus infection and should truly have a bon voyage!

She is currently continuing to work with her advisor Dr. Mary K. Estes as a postdoc and will start as a postdoc in a lab in Pediatric Gastroenterology next year

Britta Johnson, daughter of Diane Persson and Daniel Johnson, receive her J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center. She is planning to take the Texas Bar exam in July.

Nils Johnson, son of Diane Persson and Daniel Johnson, received his M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He will marry Allison Kozdron May 29, and they will move to Chicago where Nils begins a residency in medicine at Northwestern University (McGaw Medical Center) in June.

Cathy Labuda received her EdD in Mathematics Education from the University of Houston. Her dissertation research was in mathematical problem solving and teacher professional development.

Cathy and her husband John are moving to Calgary, Canada, where Cathy hopes to get a work permit and continue her educational consulting and math tutoring business. John was transferred to Calgary with Westlake Chemical. We will really miss Cathy and John, but wish them Godspeed.

Richard Muma, son of Sally Muma, received his PhD from the University of Missouri, St. Louis.

Elizabeth Parsons, daughter Lynda Parsons, graduated with an M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine. Elizabeth is the recipient of a Duke William G. Anlyan senior scholarship and a member of the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. In June she will move to Boston to begin residency in Harvard’s Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics program at the Brigham and Massachusetts General Hospitals.

Tim Redl graduated from Rice University with a PhD in Computational and Applied Mathematics. The title of his doctoral dissertation is “A Study of University Timetabling that Blends Graph Coloring with the Satisfaction of Various Essential and Preferential Conditions.”

After graduation Tim will continue to live in Houston and work during the summer at Cy-Fair College, where he is currently an Adjunct Instructor of Mathematics. He is pursuing a career in teaching and researching mathematics, applied mathematics, or a related field at the college or university level.

Eileen Spehr graduated from Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. She was a member of the seminary’s one hundred and fortieth graduating class. She writes that for the present she is going to be assisting on a contract basis at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hatsboro, PA.

Did we miss anyone? Please let the church office know if you have additional information.
