Heart and Soul Festival

Eleven churches and synagogues along Houston’s Main Street corridor are joining together to present the first annual Heart and Soul Festival: A Celebration of Houston’s Historic Sacred Places on May 1, 2004. Each of the churches and synagogues, including four that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will offer free tours and activities from 10:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. to showcase their unique historic, cultural, architectural, and spiritual contributions.

By taking the new Metro light rail line, visitors can reach all the participating sacred places; Christ Church Cathedral, Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, Trinity Episcopal Church, St. John’s United Methodist Church, South Main Baptist Church, Covenant Church, St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, First Unitarian Universalist Church, St Paul’s United Methodist Church, Congregation Emanu El, and Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church.

Some highlights include musical concerts, art exhibits, a Zen garden, magnificent stained glass windows, an outdoor labyrinth (maze), a raised altar designed after a 15th century church in Venice, a 135’ foot bell tower, and a “Baptist Stairway to Heaven”.
