Art and Architecture of the Gothic
Cathedral
On April 18 and 25 Professor Linda Neagley
of the Department of Art History at Rice will present two adult education classes
on the art and architecture of the Gothic cathedral. She will discuss the design
features of the cathedrals, explaining how they were intended to create a worship
place that evoked a reflective attitude and a sense of awe. Professor Neagley,
an accomplished teacher and widely known expert on this subject, will utilize
slides to illustrate her lecture. Many people consider Gothic cathedrals the supreme
architectural achievements of humankind, and here is a chance to learn about them,
to understand how you might have experienced them had you lived in the fourteenth
century, and to appreciate every aspect of their design, from the soaring ceilings
to the stained-glass windows.
