At the Bach Vespers on Sunday, February 8, the Bach Choir and Orchestra will present Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata 93:Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten (If you but trust in God to guide you), a sacred madrigal by Johann Hermann Schein, and a motet by Hans Leo Hassler. Dr. Leon Couch, Texas A&M faculty member, will be the guest conductor.
The Organ Vespers on Sunday, February 29, is entitled "Music for Passiontide." Appearing with Martin Rost, cathedral organist of Stralsund, Germany, will be baritone Daniel Roob of London, England, singing vocal works with Rost accompanying. [Rost played the wonderful dedication concerts for our pipe organ in October, 1995.] This very special Lenten Vespers, with music by Samuel Scheidt, Dietrich Buxtehude, Matthias Weckmann, Nicolaus Bruhns, and Franz Tunder, also includes songs and major organ works by J. S. Bach.
Both Vespers are at 5:00 p.m. There is no admission charge; an offering will be received.
The Bach Society has also added two organ recitals to its spring schedule. Leon Couch will present the first on Palm Sunday, April 4, at 5:00 p.m. Dale Voelker (Washington, DC), guest conductor for the May 16 Bach Vespers, will present an organ recital on April 18 or April 25 (final date TBA).
