Adult Sunday Forum in October: Educating
Our Global Community
The Adult Forum meets at 9:45 a.m. on Sundays in the Adult Classroom. The schedule
for October is
- October 5
- Your Space or Mine? Cross-cultural Uses of Space, presented by Federico
Salas-Isnardi. Communication doesn't always happen in a familiar space; when
people of different cultures meet in a common space, different assumptions
about our surroundings communicate a lot about us. But the message may not
be one we intended to send! This will be a quick and entertaining overview
of the concepts involved in the cultural uses of space and time. If time permits,
we will look at the development of sacred space in different cultures.
- October 12
- Philipp Melanchthon on Education and Faith, presented by Günter Frank,
Melanchthon Museum, Bretten. Dr. Günter Frank, director of the Melanchthon
Museum in Bretten, Germany, will make a presentation to the Adult Forum on
Sunday, October 12. The presentation will include photographs from the extensive
holdings of the Museum located in the city where Melanchthon was born.
- October 19
- Zapotec Farmers' Survival in the 21st Century World Economy,
presented by Aldo Gonzalez. Aldo GonzalezDirector of the Union of Organizations
of the Sierra Juarez Oaxaca (UNOSJO)is a Zapotec indigenous and community
leader from Guelatao in the Sierra Juarez mountain range of northern Oaxaca,
Mexico. UNOSJO provides technical assistance and consultation to small farmers
with the goal of promoting sustainable rural economies that are based on respect
for indigenous cultures. They play a vital role in educating local communities
and collaborating with national and international organizations about such
concerns as genetically modified corn. He will address the dangers he perceives
for small farmers, consumers and indigenous people throughout the hemisphere,
and will offer viable community-based alternatives.

- Prof. Timothy Wengert (first of three presentations): Justification by Faith
Alone. Prof. Timothy J. Wengert, the Melanchthon Institute resident scholar
will give the first of three presentations on the heart of Lutheranism: Justification
by Faith alone; Law and Gospel; Good Works. Find out what makes Luther a Lutheran.
