CanCare Offers Fall Volunteer Training

CanCare of Houston, Inc., a ministry of our congregation, has the mission to improve the quality of life for cancer survivors and their families. CanCare will host a 17-hour training course October 24-26, 2003 for cancer survivors and family members to become certified CanCare volunteers.

After completion of the training course, CanCare volunteer cancer survivors will be able to provide one-on-one emotional support to others experiencing cancer. CanCare matches volunteers with individuals according to cancer type, treatment, gender and age for long-term encouragement and support.

Trainers include doctors, nurses, clergy, psychotherapists and other cancer survivors. The extraordinary relationships that are formed between patients and survivors allow the patients to talk openly and bare concerns without feeling that they are overburdening their loved ones.

CanCare also recognizes that cancer is a family disease. Family members are also matched to train caregivers for support, to learn how they can cope and become a member of the "healing team."

Survivors and family members can now apply their cancer experience to help others. Call CanCare for information and an appointment at 713-461-0028.
