Second Friday Film Group at MFA with Director Present May 9

The Second Friday Film Discussion group is in for a treat with a showing and discussion of the film, Shadow Kill, by its director Adoor Gopalakrishnan and author Suranjan Ganguly at the Museum of Fine Arts Brown Auditorium on Friday, May 9.

The group will meet at 6 p.m. for dinner/snacks in the Cafe Express in the basement of the Audrey Jones Beck Building. The showing is in the Caroline Wiess Law building at the corner of Main and Binz streets.

Shadow Kill is set in 1941 just as Gandhi´s freedom struggle is taking shape, The film tells the story of Kaliyappan, an aging hangman haunted by the many men he has killed in the service of British rule. Believed by the villagers to possess the powers of the goddess Kali, he prays to her to remove his sins and drinks to soothe his troubled conscience. When he is called upon to perform another execution, a revelation about the accused confirms all of his fears. It is described as a stunning portrait of a man forced to bear the burdens of spirituality, politics, and personal responsibility. Author Suranjan Ganguly is chair of Film Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder and author of a forthcoming book on Adoor Gopalakrishnan.

The group will meet afterward to discuss the film with dessert at the nearby Warwick Hotel. Those purchasing their movie tickets at the box office starting at 5:30 p.m. will receive a voucher for 10% off at the museum's Cafe Express.

No need to call or make reservations. Just come join us for an informal relaxed end-of-the week gathering!
