Though Parish Nursing has historical roots in the role of the deaconesses and religious sisters, the present day concept began in the early 1980s as a result of the efforts of the Rev. Granger Westberg. Today, Parish Nurses serve in communities around the world, and Parish Nursing is the fastest growing nursing specialty. The Parish Nurse works within the community of faith to promote health and wellness and implement a health ministry
Health ministry at CTK is nearly one year old. The Congregational Care Team continues to play an important role in this effort. If you have delivered a meal, given a ride, written a prayer note, served as an LEM, extended a helping hand, or provided a listening ear, you have been a health minister. Participation in such groups as CanCare, Community of Hope, and CPR classes equips members for health ministry.
On February 2 Parish Nursing and Health Ministry at CTK will be a topic of discussion for the Adult Forum. I will present more details about the history of Parish Nursing and how CTK's health ministry model is developing. I am also anxious to receive feedback from members regarding their perceptions of Parish Nursing. In addition, I want to learn which health issues members would like to see addressed in the monthly Banner articles or adult forum classes.
Please join me and together we will explore our health ministry.
