What Medications Are You Taking?
by Linda Schoene, Parish Nurse

The answer to this often asked question is very important, especially for the individual who sees more than one healthcare provider or takes multiple medications. Keeping an updated list of all medications is a valuable habit. Be sure to include all herbals, vitamins, and over-the-counter medications. Make several copies as handy references for hospital admissions and visits to a new healthcare provider.

Here are other guidelines for tracking your medications:

  1. When a new medication is prescribed, be sure you (or the one you are caring for) understand how and when to take it. Also ask about common side effects.
  2. Ask your healthcare provider to review your medication list for possible duplicate medications or potential drug interactions. This is especially important if a healthcare provider prescribes a new medication.
  3. If possible, fill all prescriptions at the same pharmacy. The pharmacy records serve as another source of duplication and interaction information. Drugs for the same condition can have many different names.
  4. Consult your healthcare provider before taking an over-the-counter medication or herbals and be sure to read the directions and warning labels.
  5. Be aware that antacids can interfere with the absorption of other medications and should not be taken at the same time unless instructed to do so by your provider.
  6. Ask your healthcare provider to review your medication list every six months. This is especially important for older adults taking multiple medications.
