Adult Education

Adult Forum

The increased space provided by the new building will allow the Adult Forum to offer two tracks of classes beginning in January. One track will focus on community service and other contemporary issues; the other will focus on Biblical and theological studies.

Contemporary issues classes will include:

January 19
Dr. Sharon Ostwald, Isla Carroll Turner Chair in Gerontological Nursing and Professor in the School of Nursing and Direction of the UT-Houston Center on Aging, will discuss lessons from the "nuns' study." The nuns' study was a longitudinal study of the aging brain, published in a best seller, Aging with Grace. The study followed sisters who were at least 75 years old over a 10-year period of time. This class will review the findings of the book as they relate to longevity, functional ability, and Alzheimer's disease in these aging nuns. Sharon was one of the co-investigators during the initial years of the study in Minnesota.
January 26
Dr. Naomi Nelson, Research Health Scientist and Co-Associate Director of Education, Parkinson's Disease Research, Education & Clinical Center at Houston's VA Medical Center, will speak on "Coping with Chronic Illness: The Impact on Family and Friends." This class will examine common emotional themes present in chronic illness and suggest approaches that may be helpful.
February 2
Linda Schoene, who has worked as a nurse for over 30 years and is now our congregation's Parish Nurse, will speak on the parish nursing program at CTK.
