A team of excellent musicians and teachers will be leading the children’s music programs at Christ the King beginning this fall. Classes are available for children of all ages (from birth through high school) and are offered in conjunction with Wednesday Night Alive! The team will be available at WNA registration on September 6 to explain course offerings and advise parents on classes appropriate to their child’s development.
Debbie Whitmire is a music and movement teacher with Bachelors degrees in piano and Dalcroze Eurythmics from the Cleveland Institute of Music. For the past 20 years, Ms. Whitmire has taught in Houston area schools, including West University United Methodist Preschool, Arts a La Carte, River Oaks Montessori, The Fay School, St. Catherine’s Montessori and First Steps (St. John the Divine Episcopal). She also has a private piano studio of students from preschool to adult. Ms. Whitmire is certified in Musikgarten, a very popular method of music education for preschool children, and also holds the highest certification from the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association (ECMMA), as well as Orff certification.
Kirsten Jordon is a music teacher, singer, and conductor who received her Bachelors Degree in Music Education and Vocal Performance from Virginia Tech. She taught music in schools in Texas (Fort Bend School District), Virginia, and Oregon for ten years. She directed the Town Choir of the Fort Bend Boys Choir from 2002-2005, and also teaches voice and beginner piano. Her performing experience includes the Houston Symphony Chorus, the Portland Symphonic Choir, and many festivals, professional and church choirs. Her professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association and the Music Educators National Conference.
Kelly DeVany began her musical studies on the piano at the age of eight and in the following years began studying flute and organ in Minnesota. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Music Management from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and a Master of Music degree in Flute Performance at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has won several competitions and performed with various ensembles and in recitals in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Texas. She is currently pursuing teaching and performing opportunities throughout the United States.
