Debt cancellation is an effective way to fight global poverty. Last year the US government helped reach an important debt cancellation agreement for an initial 18 countries. To ensure these resources reach the poor, we must demand accountability and transparency from both creditors and impoverished countries. But too many nations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America face delays or have been left out of the 2005 agreement because of requirements that they implement harmful policies. In contrast, HR 1130 calls for debt cancellation for poverty eradication without harmful economic policy strings attached.
