Comedy Middle Eastern Style
with Houston Directors-Producers

The Second Friday Filmgoers program for March 10 will feature Comedy Middle Eastern Style with guests Soodabeh Oskoui (Sudi) Babcock and James Babcock of Houston who produced and directed the documentary.

The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the basement classroom at Christ the King Church. All are also invited to meet for dinner at 6 p.m. with our guests at Hungry’s Restaurant across the street from the church before the showing. If you are interested in joining us for dinner, please contact Anna Fay Williams so we may make reservations. This evening provides a nice opportunity to get acquainted with two award-winning directors/producers who are from Houston and to share in their experiences in this very worthwhile documentary.

The film which has been previewed in the Houston area at Rice Cinema has been highly recommended by Educational Media Reviews Online. In the words of Sudi Babcock, “The Middle East is a region filled with contradictions and is often thought of as a place of chaos and war. Mainstream media insists on reporting only the turmoil, pandemonium, and bloodshed, but rarely presents the true sentiments of the majority of the people, who live their daily lives longing for peace.”
In Comedy Middle Eastern Style, there is a mix of humor accompanied by candid interviews at Middle Eastern comedy clubs in New York city. The comedians—Arab, Israeli, Pakistani and Iranian—also share their personal views on political issues and the prejudice they’ve endured since September 11.
Sudi Babcock summarizes: “This documentary looks at the power humor has to heal the wounds of war, and perhaps allow each of us to understand one another a little better.”

A discussion will follow with Sudi and James Babcock after the one-hour documentary. All in the congregation are invited to this special showing—the first time we will have local film producers visiting with us to discuss their film. Last month, we had a record turnout—almost 40 persons—who came to view the documentary on Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Pacifist and Nazi Resistor.
