New for 2006
Medicare Prescription Insurance
1. All Medicare members are eligible for this new program designed to help
with the cost of prescriptions.
2. Private healthcare companies offer the prescription plans. Medicare must
approve the selected plan.
3. Each plan will offer different coverage for certain drugs, so it pays to
shop around for the one that will best meet your needs.
4. The deadline to sign up is May 15, 2006. There will be open enrollment every
year from November 15 through December 31. You will have the opportunity to
keep the same plan or choose a new one. Some companies will charge a penalty
for those who decline to sign up this year.
Whatever you decide, remember it is best to use a single pharmacy to fill your prescriptions. This practice can help identify drug interactions. In addition, many pharmacies can help you track your health information. Ask your pharmacy about this option.
Remember too, that there are those who would like to take advantage of this situation by calling to offer “ a great prescription plan”. Never give your insurance information or Social Security number over the phone, even if they say they represent Medicare. Medicare already knows your social security number.
