2008 Missional Emphases

In 2008, the congregation of Christ the King Lutheran Church resolves:

Grateful for the abundant resources God has showered on this congregation, and mindful that we are called to be responsible stewards of those precious gifts, we the people of Christ the King Lutheran Church commit ourselves, our time, and our space to the following missional emphases in 2008:

logoTo expand opportunities for communication within the congregation concerning the use and impact of our resources by implementing descriptive financial documents that present a clear picture of our stewardship (time, talent, and treasure), by seeking out new opportunities for discussion with our members in small groups, and by listening actively to perceive the working of the Holy Spirit in each other.

To build on the success of our investment in youth and family ministry and campus ministry by expanding our commitment to minister to the spiritual needs of young adults as they transition through different life experiences.

To make concerted efforts to cultivate a culture of Christian hospitality that pervades every aspect of our congregational life, including our facilities, our greeting of visitors, and our interactions with each other.

Christ the King Lutheran Church is located at the corner of Rice Boulevard and Greenbriar in the Rice University Village area of Houston, Texas. Our congregation draws many members from Rice University, the Texas Medical Center and the surrounding neighborhood, yet a number of our local members live as much as an hour away. Presently we have more than 800 members of whom about 400 people attend worship on any given weekend. Christ the King is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Different worship services are offered at Christ the King. Our Saturday evening worship is a simple, meditative worship using the liturgy of the Taize community. The earlier worship on Sunday often uses the contemporary musical settings of the liturgy, while the later service on Sunday is a traditional service with organ accompaniment. Once a month, usually on the evening of the first Sunday, we worship in the German language. Children are welcome at all services. Staff members and parent volunteers provide a safe and caring nursery for members and visitors four years of age and younger as needed. Holy communion is celebrated at all worship services, and baptized Christians of all ages and denominations are invited to the Lord's table.

Our Sunday Church School meets from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. We have classes for students from 2 years of age up through adulthood. Nursery is available during this time.

Members of the congregation lead a brief service of morning prayer Monday through Friday at 8:15 a.m. in the nave. This service includes scripture readings and prayers for members, friends or relatives in special need. All are invited.

Baptisms are performed as part of regular worship services, except in emergencies. At least one parent of a child to be baptized must be a member of Christ the King. Weddings are scheduled with a pastor, generally after premarital counseling. At least one partner must be a member of Christ the King.

Three pastors currently serve Christ the King. They lead services of worship and are also trained in counseling. They are available to assist anyone in need. Please call the church office if you would like to speak to a pastor, send Email to all of the pastors, or contact any pastor directly through his or her individual, private Email.

Persons may join the congregation of Christ the King Lutheran Church by baptism, transfer from another congregation, or by restoration. The normal route to membership includes a ten-hour class on the Christian faith from a Lutheran perspective. The class is taught primarily by the pastors and uses the classic text of the Small Catechism by Martin Luther. The course serves both as a introduction to the faith and a review of Christian basics.
